I didn't know much about fresh figs until my next-door neighbor shared some with me. I pictured figs as fig newtons from childhood and reminiscent of the stories I read in the Bible. Today, when they are ripening off our mature tree, I have at least 2 for breakfast.
Most people don't know that figs contain copper, vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin K, fiber, and, of course, water. I really love them because they are sweet when ripe and so filling.
Speaking of the Bible, fig leaves date back to Adam and Eve. Can you guess why? The fig leaves were used to cover their bodies when they realized they were naked. Yes, fig leaves. So figs have been here from the beginning. A historical reference is always a good place to start in learning about figs!
Figs are referenced throughout the Bible. They are used in a parable; they are referenced along with olive trees; they are used as a metaphor. Figs have been eternal. They are also good for you. If you want to know about fig trees, look up all the references in the Bible that depict them.
And yes, figs can grow in the Pacific Northwest and so many other places in the United States. Even if you have a small yard, one or two fig trees work great and produce a good harvest during the ripening season for your household, or just yourself! You can even make jam if you get overwhelmed with a harvest!
If you have one, enjoy....I know I am!
